BMW claimed to have sold almost 75,891 all-electric automobiles in the half of 2022.

BERLIN, Sept 9 BMW has officially announced adopting Tesla’s 4680 format battery cells from giant Chinese battery manufacturers CATL and EVE Energy in its upcoming “Neue Klass” vehicles, which are expected to launch by 2025.

BMW intelligently decided to partner with Chinese manufacturers instead of building gigafactories to manufacture battery packs for its future electric cars. Gigafactories could be referred to as factories that produce battery cells on an extensive scale.

However, Tesla was the first to set up these factories, and call them gigafactories instead. But, BMW is going to take one step ahead going to significantly reduce the manufacturing cost for these high-capacity batteries by dedicating its In-House Battery Cell Competence Centre to work alongside these Chinese giant manufacturers.

The German carmaker rejected the idea of using Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries only to produce cheaper vehicles. The company wanted higher voltage batteries to power 800v current in Neue Klasse models. Therefore, they have opted for 6th generation lithium-ion cylindrical batteries, which have great energy density.

These high voltage batteries are expected to have 20% more energy packed with a reduced charging time of 20% faster than the previous generation. Not only this, the mile range will be seen to increase up to 30% from the current generation.

In my opinion:

BMW is definitely going to give a tough time to its global automobile counterparts by merging its in-house competence research with giant Chinese battery cell manufacturers.
